Uganda and UAE Sign Agreement to Construct Third International Airport

Agreement

Uganda has finalized an agreement with a business association from the United Arab Emirates to construct a new international airport, as announced by President Yoweri Museveni’s office on Friday. This deal, marking Uganda’s third international airport, signifies an expansion of UAE’s economic activities beyond its interests in renewable energy, oil, and gas sectors.

The Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry from the UAE will undertake the construction of the airport near Kidepo National Park, located in the northeast of Uganda, close to the Kenyan border. President Museveni’s office did not disclose the cost but mentioned that construction is set to begin in August, according to Abdallah Sultan Al Owais, chairman of the Sharjah business body.

Signed Agreement

This new airport is expected to enhance tourism by attracting more visitors to the 1,442-sq-km (557-sq-mile) Kidepo park, which is famous for its lions, giraffes, buffaloes, and other large wildlife. President Museveni, who attended the signing, noted on X that the agreement reflects the strengthening ties with Gulf partners and represents a new opportunity for cooperation in investment and trade.

What This Means for the Future of Uganda’s Tourism and Transport

The construction of a new international airport near Kidepo National Park is poised to significantly boost Uganda’s tourism industry by making the park more accessible to international visitors. This development will likely increase the influx of tourists, drawn by the park’s diverse wildlife and natural beauty, thereby promoting the country’s tourism sector.

Additionally, the new airport will enhance Uganda’s transport infrastructure, facilitating better connectivity both within the country and with international destinations. This improvement in transportation links can lead to increased trade and investment opportunities, further contributing to Uganda’s economic growth.
