Uganda is set to integrate gastronomy into its upcoming 10-year tourism strategy, building on insights from the recent UN Tourism Regional Forum on Gastronomy held in Zimbabwe, Lilly Ajarova, CEO of the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) revealed.

The country’s culinary landscape is undergoing a revival, with growing interest from entrepreneurs and the private sector. Ugandan restaurants featuring local dishes are becoming increasingly common in urban areas, making traditional regional cuisines more accessible.

Agrotourism is also on the rise, with new guidelines promoting farm-to-table experiences. Additionally, cultural villages offering hands-on traditional cooking experiences are expanding, enriching Uganda’s diverse tourism attractions.

The UTB is also prioritizing the development of its MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) sector, with significant infrastructure projects in progress. New hotels from major international brands like Hilton and Marriott are being built to meet the growing demand.

In August, the UTB will launch a new Marketing Strategy aimed at strengthening Uganda’s reputation as a top tourism destination.
