UTB Launches Digital App to elevate tourism experiences

Explore Uganda App

The Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), in collaboration with Total Energies Uganda, has launched the Explore Uganda App, a new digital platform designed to enhance travel experiences for both domestic and international tourists in Uganda. This app offers a modern approach to exploring Uganda’s diverse attractions, helping visitors navigate its scenic landscapes, cultural sites, and a variety of local experiences.

During the launch event, UTB CEO Lilly Ajarova highlighted the app as a transformative tool for connecting with the next generation of travelers. She noted that Explore Uganda goes beyond a standard travel resource; it’s a digital invitation to discover Uganda’s unique heritage, remarkable biodiversity, and breathtaking scenery. This initiative aligns with UTB’s broader goal to showcase Uganda as a premier destination and leverage technology to elevate the tourism sector’s role in economic growth.

UTB Board Chairperson Pearl Kakooza emphasized that the app addresses critical challenges in the tourism industry, such as visibility and accessibility, by providing a comprehensive guide for self-directed exploration. With user-friendly itineraries, accommodation options, cultural insights, and local events, Explore Uganda is designed to meet the growing preference for self-guided travel, making Uganda more accessible and engaging for a wide range of visitors.

Total Energies Uganda, with operations near the Murchison Falls National Park in the North Albertine region, views the app as a way to support community-driven tourism and foster sustainable development in Uganda’s tourism sector. Pauline MacRonald, Total Energies’ Biodiversity Director, expressed hope that the app will spotlight Uganda’s attractions globally, offering a platform for local tour operators, community enterprises, and potential investors to connect with a larger audience.

Built by a skilled team of six Ugandan women developers, the Explore Uganda app includes features like real-time weather updates, location-based search for accommodations, restaurants, and events, as well as multi-currency support. Available in English, French, Swahili, Spanish, and German, the app also offers customer support and a feedback system, making it a robust tool for travelers. The app is accessible for download on both the App Store and Google Play, marking a pivotal step toward modernizing Uganda’s tourism industry and enhancing its global reach.
