The Kenya Simbas clinched the 2024 Elgon Cup with a commanding performance against Uganda’s Rugby Cranes in the second leg at Kings Park Arena, Bweyogerere, on Saturday.
The Simbas, who had narrowly edged the Cranes 27-25 in the first leg in Nairobi the previous week, came out roaring in the return fixture. Ephraim Odour set the tone with an early try, converted by Timothy Omela for a 7-0 lead. Eugene Sifuna followed up with another try in the 18th minute, with Omela again converting to extend the advantage to 14-0. Andy Cole then joined the action with a third try, and Omela’s flawless kick pushed the lead to an imposing 21-0, silencing the home supporters.
In the second half, Uganda made key substitutions, bringing on Ian Munyani, Michael Otto, and Timothy Kisiga to strengthen their defense and stem Kenya’s momentum. Despite the adjustments, the Rugby Cranes struggled with slippery conditions and poor ball handling.
A missed penalty by Shakimu Sembusi four minutes after the restart added to Uganda’s woes. Sydney Gongodyo managed to score a try, but Yassin Waiswa missed a crucial conversion in the 79th minute, leaving the final score at 21-5. Kenya’s resolute defense proved unyielding, while the Cranes were left lamenting missed opportunities.
