Karuma Bridge Re-Opens to Traffic

Karuma bridge1

Karuma Bridge has reopened to traffic after three months of rehabilitation, marking a major milestone in the connectivity of northern Uganda. The bridge reopened to traffic, according to the Minister of Works and Transport Gen. Katumba Wamala, who said light vehicles and buses can cross, while heavy trucks will have to wait until further repairs are done.

Its earlier closure  made many travelers to northern Uganda and West Nile pass through the longer routes of Masindi Port and Murchison Falls National Park. But now, it has opened, and motorists will again enjoy a smoother drive

A New Bridge in Sight

The point is, there will also be a suspended bridge in Karuma Falls to bring an even safer and much more durable connection with that region. This bridge was scheduled to be ready in 2032, promising enormous changes in the economic status and tourism industry in Northern Uganda.

The Road to Rehabilitation

Karuma Bridge was closed first in April 2024 for major repairs after the inspection by Minister Katumba Wamala showed that the bearings and expansion joints were worn out. The rehabilitation process was a complex one, but the end result is a safer and more reliable bridge for all users.

As the region rejoices at the opening of Karuma Bridge, it is clear that all this heralds a new era of connectivity in northern Uganda. In fact, with a new bridge on the horizon and with promises of continuing maintenance and repair, the future for this vibrant, beautiful region shines bright.
