Uganda is Ebola-Free and safe for travel

Uganda Safe for travel

Uganda has eliminated the Sudan virus, a variant of Ebola, by discharging eight recovered patients after testing negative twice. These individuals were treated in Kampala and Mbale, after having been tested positive of the disease.

With 216 contacts still under observation, Uganda’s Ministry of Health, in collaboration with WHO, remains committed to containing the outbreak. Since the outbreak’s declaration on January 30, 2025, authorities have enhanced early detection, clinical treatment, infection prevention, and public awareness campaigns to control the virus’s spread.

WHO has played a crucial role by deploying 47 emergency health experts, supplying vital medical equipment, and establishing an 84-bed isolation unit at Mulago National Hospital. Research efforts, including a pioneering vaccination trial and advancements in treatment strategies, are ongoing to find effective solutions against Sudan virus disease.

Community Engagement and Public Awareness Efforts

Public awareness has been essential in controlling the outbreak. WHO, alongside local health authorities, has focused on countering misinformation and encouraging early healthcare-seeking behaviors. Community leaders and health workers have played a pivotal role in education and prevention efforts, while survivor clinics provide continuous medical support and reintegration assistance for recovered patients.

Sudan virus disease is a severe and often fatal condition affecting humans and primates, with case fatality rates ranging from 41% to 100%. Although no approved vaccines or treatments currently exist, early medical intervention significantly improves survival rates.

Uganda is Open for Safe Travel

With strengthened healthcare measures and continuous international collaboration, Uganda remains a welcoming and safe destination. This success underscores the nation’s resilience and dedication to protecting public health, ensuring both residents and visitors can feel secure.
