On April 2nd, 2025, the calm shores of Lake Victoria provided the perfect backdrop for a monumental event, the official launch of Hidden Uganda, a breathtaking documentary by acclaimed American travel journalist Peter Greenberg. Hosted at Speke Resort Munyonyo, the evening was graced by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Museveni, and a host of distinguished guests from Uganda’s tourism and cultural sectors.
But this was more than just a film screening. It was a proud unveiling of Uganda’s soul, its landscapes, its people, and its untold stories, to a global audience.
What is “Hidden Uganda”?
Hidden Uganda is a visually stunning and deeply authentic documentary that captures the beauty, culture, and spirit of Uganda beyond what the world usually sees. With a keen eye and an explorer’s heart, Peter Greenberg takes viewers on an immersive journey across the country, from misty mountains to sun-drenched savannahs, from traditional villages to vibrant urban life.
The film doesn’t just showcase scenery, it tells Uganda’s story. It uncovers hidden destinations, highlights preserved cultures, and introduces everyday Ugandans whose stories reflect the strength and pride of a nation.

Speaking at the launch event, President Museveni offered more than just political commentary, he became a storyteller himself. With deep pride, he painted a picture of Uganda as a naturally gifted and historically rich country.
“We don’t need to warm or cool the air here, we just enjoy it as it is.”
He spoke about Uganda’s central location in Africa, geographically distant from colonial first contact, as a reason why its cultures, customs, and wildlife remain uniquely preserved. He even spotlighted the Ankole cattle, famed for their low-cholesterol yellow fat, as an example of Uganda’s hidden biological treasures.
“If someone is looking for original Africans,” Museveni said, “they are found in Uganda.”
The President also praised Peter Greenberg for his role in telling Uganda’s story to the world. He thanked Ms. Diana Museveni Kyaremera, CEO of Age Safaris, for her contributions to promoting local tourism and hosting the project.
A Global Window into Uganda’s Potential
The documentary’s global reach is no small matter, with Greenberg’s platform boasting over 130 million viewers, Hidden Uganda will introduce the country to millions of curious minds, adventurous travelers, and potential investors.
For Vice President Jessica Alupo, the film is a much-needed boost to Uganda’s tourism industry. “Tourism is a pillar of our development,” she said, encouraging all Ugandans to see themselves as ambassadors for their nation.
Diana Museveni Kyaremera added a personal touch, suggesting a future “royal tour” where the President himself would guide Greenberg through Uganda’s history, a poetic way of blending leadership and storytelling. “There’s no better person to tell Uganda’s story than our President,” she said.
To complement the documentary’s global spotlight, Uganda is also taking steps to ensure visitors can easily experience what they’ve seen on screen. President Museveni announced plans for two new international airports, one in Kidepo, another in’ Kanungu’, to ease access to remote but spectacular regions, allowing tourists to fly straight into the heart of Uganda’s beauty.
In Peter Greenberg’s own words, “My job is to show them experiences they can have, the people they can meet, what they can learn.” And that’s exactly what Hidden Uganda achieves — it opens a window into a country filled with warmth, authenticity, and wonder.
It is not just a travel documentary — it’s a powerful rebranding tool for Uganda. It shifts the global narrative from a history-heavy focus to one that celebrates a resilient, culturally rich, and naturally abundant nation ready to welcome the world.

Hidden Uganda is a call to rediscover, reimagine, and reintroduce Uganda to the world — not just as a travel destination, but as a living, breathing story of heritage, beauty, and pride.
As the credits rolled at Speke Resort and applause echoed across the lake, one thing was clear: Uganda has always been extraordinary. Now, thanks to Hidden Uganda, the rest of the world is about to find out.
