Uganda has once again stepped into the global spotlight as a premier adventure tourism hotspot. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, has been ranked the third best adventure destination globally at the prestigious TOURISE Global Tourism Awards held on November 12 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
This remarkable achievement places Bwindi alongside world renowned adventure icons, following the Ancash region in Peru in first place and the Galápagos Islands in Ecuador in second. For Uganda, the recognition is more than a medal; it is a powerful validation of its growing reputation as a leader in sustainable and conservation centered travel.

A Win for Conservation Led Tourism
Celebrations have echoed across the Uganda Wildlife Authority, which oversees the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bwindi’s rise to the top three was fueled by its exceptional visitor experiences and an unwavering commitment to protecting nature.
Professor James Kalema, Chairman of the UWA Board of Trustees, called the award “a powerful endorsement of Uganda’s commitment to conservation led tourism.” He highlighted how Bwindi balances world class adventure with meaningful community empowerment and sustainable national development.
UWA Executive Director Dr James Musinguzi added that the recognition reflects the success of Uganda’s conservation model. “It proves that our model of conservation based tourism is delivering results, conserving biodiversity, uplifting communities, and strengthening Uganda’s global image as the Pearl of Africa,” he said.
Why Bwindi Captured Global Attention
The TOURISE Awards honor destinations that excel in sustainability, innovation, and unforgettable visitor experiences. Bwindi stood out for several reasons.
1. Mountain Gorilla Trekking
Bwindi’s flagship adventure offering gives visitors a rare, intimate encounter with endangered mountain gorillas in their ancient rainforest home. These close up treks are often described as life changing.
2. Exceptional Biodiversity
Beyond the gorillas, the park is a thriving biodiversity haven with more than 120 mammal species, over 350 bird species, and a stunning collection of plants including trees estimated to be over 25,000 years old. Bwindi is a living museum of natural heritage.
3. Rugged, Pristine Wilderness
The park’s steep valleys, dense vegetation, and misty hills offer a physically demanding yet incredibly rewarding adventure. It is a paradise for seasoned hikers seeking a truly immersive wilderness experience.
A Boost for Uganda’s Global Tourism Identity
This international recognition is expected to significantly enhance Uganda’s appeal to adventure travelers worldwide. As global interest grows in authentic, responsible, and community led tourism, Bwindi’s success reinforces the country’s identity as an ultimate gateway to raw, unfiltered nature.
For Uganda, this award is more than a global accolade; it is an invitation to the world to explore, experience, and be inspired by the natural wonders of the Pearl of Africa.
