Chemutai settles for silver at the Shanghai Diamond League

Chemutai-

Uganda’s star athlete Peruth Chemutai expressed her satisfaction with her second-place finish at the Wanda Diamond League in Shanghai/Suzhou last Saturday. Despite not clinching the top spot, the Tokyo Olympics gold medalist achieved a time of 9:15.46 in the 3,000m women’s steeplechase, trailing behind Kenya’s Beatrice Chepkoech at the Olympic Sports Centre Stadium.

Reflecting on her performance, Chemutai mentioned her joy at the ongoing improvements leading up to the Paris Olympics. She highlighted her progress, especially after securing third place in the prior Diamond League event in Xiamen just a week before. Chemutai emphasized her commitment to hard work, aiming to defend her gold medal from Tokyo.

At 24 years old, Chemutai, who also won a silver medal at the African Games in Ghana earlier this year, acknowledged that there’s still room for growth in her abilities. Dominic Otuchet, President of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), expressed confidence in Chemutai’s potential to secure a gold medal for Uganda at the Paris Olympics, citing her dedicated preparation and strong results this year.

Additionally, Otuchet mentioned other Ugandan medal prospects at the Paris Olympics, including World 5,000m and 10,000m champion Joshua Cheptegei and Jacob Kiplimo, who successfully defended his World Cross Country Championship gold in Serbia this year.
