The Iteso people, who inhabit the densely populated districts of Kumi, Soroti, Bukedea, Amuria, Butebo, Ngora, Serere, Kaberamaido, Kapelebyong, Mbale, and Pallisa in Eastern Uganda, have long been custodians of a rich cultural legacy. Their deep-rooted traditions, values, and customs continue to shape their identity and contribute to Uganda’s diverse cultural tapestry.
Also known as the “Ateso,” the Iteso belong to the larger Teso ethnic group that extends beyond Uganda into Kenya and Sudan. Their origins are woven into oral traditions, with legends describing their migration to the fertile lands of Eastern Uganda. According to folklore, the Iteso migrated from Abyssinia (modern-day Ethiopia) in the 16th century, journeying through various regions before settling in their current homeland. This migration was instrumental in shaping their cultural identity as they interacted with neighboring tribes and absorbed different customs along the way.
Iteso Culture
The Iteso take immense pride in their vibrant cultural diversity, reflected in their rituals, music, dance, and art. Traditional Organization
Iteso society is traditionally organized around clans, with a clearly defined social structure. In the past, age groups were assigned specific responsibilities, promoting collaboration and cohesion across generations. While modernization has influenced some aspects of this structure, the core cultural values of respect for elders and communal harmony remain strong.
Agriculture is at the heart of the Iteso economy, with the fertile soils of Eastern Uganda supporting the cultivation of staple crops such as groundnuts, maize, sorghum, and millet. Livestock farming, particularly cattle rearing, is also an important economic activity. The Iteso’s farming practices reflect a deep understanding of the local environment, emphasizing sustainability and harmony with nature.
In recent years, some Iteso have diversified their livelihoods by engaging in trade, entrepreneurship, and formal employment. This shift has introduced both opportunities and challenges as traditional agricultural practices coexist with modern economic pursuits.
