The Ugandan government has allocated Shs7.5 billion (£1.63 million) to restore the historic Ankole Mugaba Palace in Mbarara City, aiming to transform it into a significant tourist destination. Formerly the royal residence of the Ankole Kingdom, the palace holds great cultural importance and is expected to officially welcome tourists by December 2024 after extensive renovations.

The palace is tied to the rich traditions of the Ankole Kingdom, known for its long-horned cattle. The restoration, which started in 2018, involves refurbishing four key buildings, redesigning the compound, and enhancing security. The government also plans to reintroduce historical artefacts from the early 20th century to enrich the visitor experience.

Along with cultural preservation, the revamped site will offer faith-based tourism opportunities. Although currently free to visit, the palace is already drawing attention, with the project seen as a way to boost tourism and honour Ankole’s legacy. The Kingdom remains one of the country’s ancient monarchies, historically ruled by the Omugabe.

About the Ankole Kingdom

Renowned for its prized long-horned cattle, the kingdom’s economy and culture were heavily based on cattle herding and agriculture. The kingdom flourished through its traditions of art, music, and leadership, maintaining a strong sense of identity among the Banyankole people. Although the Ugandan government abolished the monarchy in 1967, the cultural influence of the Ankole Kingdom remains significant, with efforts like the restoration of the Mugaba Palace preserving its historical legacy.
