Four-time Grammy-winning American artist Matt B has donated all his Grammy trophies to the Uganda Museum in recognition of the Ugandan creatives who contributed to his album ALKĒBULĀN II. Currently visiting Uganda, Matt B announced the donation during engagements with the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) and cultural stakeholders.
“Uganda embraced me when others wouldn’t,” Matt B said. “This is my way of saying thank you for the support and inspiration.”
The trophies will be featured in a new museum exhibit celebrating Uganda’s role in global music collaborations. The exhibit will spotlight local producers, songwriters, and artists involved in ALKĒBULĀN II, while promoting the museum as a modern hub for cultural exchange.
UTB sees the artist’s visit as a boost to its destination branding efforts, having hosted him on a tour of key heritage sites in Kampala. UTB CEO Juliana Kagwa called the donation “a powerful intersection of arts and tourism,” highlighting the creative sector’s role in promoting Uganda internationally.
The move comes as Uganda’s tourism sector rebounds post-pandemic, with 2024 seeing a 41% increase in international visitors and $1.1 billion in tourism revenue. Cultural tourism, including music and heritage, now makes up 18% of visitor activity.
The Uganda Museum plans to unveil a permanent exhibit around the Grammys and Uganda’s growing presence in global music. The initiative aims to educate, inspire local artists, and draw diverse, younger audiences.
Matt B’s donation stands as a landmark moment for Uganda’s creative sector, reinforcing its role on the global stage and advancing cultural diplomacy through music.
