Hoima Stadium Set to Transform Uganda’s Oil City into a Hub of Sports and Opportunity

Hoima Stadium

The ambitious construction of the Hoima Multi-Purpose Stadium is well underway, adding a modern touch to the skyline of Kyarwiru Cell in Hoima East Division, Hoima City. This 20,000-seater stadium, a key project ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), is set to become a cornerstone of sports and development in the region.

Contracted to the Turkish firm M/S SUMMA in June last year, the project has already achieved 22% completion. With a December 2025 deadline, the construction remains on track according to the project manager, Murat Altun. Speaking to Uganda Radio Network (URN), Altun highlighted the scale of the work underway, which includes progress on the pavilion and underground structures. The project currently employs over 1,000 workers, of which 75% are Ugandans—a strong reflection of local involvement in the initiative.

As one of the selected venues for the 2027 AFCON matches, the stadium represents more than just a sports facility. It is a symbol of Uganda’s growing ambition on the continental stage. The 18-month timeline for the project is closely monitored by the Ministry of Works and Transport, in collaboration with the Africa Cup of Nations Sub-Committee on Infrastructure, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to international standards.

Hoima City Mayor Brian Kaboyo has called on residents to prepare themselves for the wealth of opportunities that the stadium’s construction and eventual operation will bring. From job creation to new business ventures, the ripple effect of this development is expected to energize the local economy.

As the stadium continues to take shape, its impact on the region’s growth and its role in Uganda’s hosting of the 2027 AFCON serve as a testament to the transformative power of sports infrastructure. With Hoima rapidly cementing its status as a key city in Uganda’s development story, the stadium is more than just a structure it’s a beacon of progress and pride for the entire nation.
