Ugandan Rolex, commonly referred to as Rolex, is a popular food item in Uganda, combining an egg omelette and vegetables wrapped in a chapati.

The origin of the this extreme delicacy is a tale of ingenuity born out of necessity. The idea sprouted from the mind of a Ugandan businessman located near Makerere University in Kikoni, Kampala. With a bustling student population in need of quick and affordable meals, the Rolex found its humble beginnings as the go-to snack for the masses.

Today, the Rolex is a ubiquitous presence in Ugandan culinary culture. From small towns to bustling Kampala, you’ll find it readily available at chapatti stalls, local eateries, big hotels, and even chain restaurants. Its popularity doesn’t stop at the country’s borders; the delectable taste and low cost have propelled the Rolex to international fame. CNN recognized it as one of the top African fast foods, making it a must-try for any traveler venturing into Uganda.

Its popularity has even led to creative variations like the “Titanic,” involving multiple chapattis rolled together with additional fillings, and the “Kikomando,” where sliced chapatti is mixed with beans—a nod to its wartime origins.

  2. Gather the egg mixture ingredients: cabbage, onions, tomatoes, green pepper, and eggs.
  3. Heat up a frying pan, preferably one of the locally made Ugandan pans for an authentic touch.
  4. Make the chapattis and set them aside.
  5. Heat oil in the pan, beat 2-3 eggs, and mix in onions, salt, cabbage, and green pepper. Fry the eggs.
  6. Place a chapatti on top of the eggs as they near completion. After about 15 seconds, remove from heat.
