Top 10 Banks in Uganda by Assets

Uganda’s financial landscape is buzzing with activity, serving as a vibrant hub for banking and financial services across East Africa. While the country boasts an impressive lineup of institutions, the majority aren’t homegrown heroes, they’re outposts of international financial giants. Still, whether local or global, these banks are shaping Uganda’s economic pulse, and they all answer to one key player: the Bank of Uganda.

As the nation’s central bank, the Bank of Uganda keeps a tight grip on the sector, licensing and regulating all 25 commercial banks currently operating in the country. Its mission? To safeguard macroeconomic stability and ensure the financial system doesn’t wobble. And it’s doing a solid job, some of these banks are juggernauts, boasting hundreds of thousands of active accounts and raking in steady revenue streams year after year.

1. Stanbic Bank

Stanbic Bank isn’t just playing the game, it’s owning it. For five years running, it’s held the crown as Uganda’s largest financial institution. As a subsidiary of Stanbic Africa Holdings Limited, this powerhouse offers everything from debit and credit cards to loans, savings, mortgages, and even a bold leap into real estate development. As of 31 December 2024, the bank’s total assets were valued at USh10.4 trillion (US$2.852 billion). In the calendar year 2024, the bank made an after-tax profit of USh478 billion (US$131.104 million).

Rewind to 1906, and Stanbic’s story began as The National Bank of India. It morphed into Grindlays Bank before Stanbic swooped in during 1991. The real game-changer came in 2002 when Standard Bank scooped up 90% of Uganda Commercial Bank’s shares, rebranding it as Stanbic Bank Uganda Limited. Today, it has HQ towers over Kampala at Crested Towers on Hannington Road.

2. Centenary Bank

If you’re looking for a bank with deep Ugandan roots, Centenary Bank delivers. A titan in commercial microfinance, it serves over 2 million customers with an asset base of USh. 6.3 trillion (US$1.679 billion) as of 31 December 2023. With 81 branches and 180 ATMs sprinkled nationwide, it’s a lifeline for over 2 million clients.

Born in 1983 under Catholic leadership, Centenary became a full-fledged commercial bank by 1993. Its headquarters at Mapeera House in Kampala stand as a testament to its local legacy.

3. Absa Bank

Absa Bank, formerly Barclays, has been a fixture since 1927. It beefed up its Ugandan footprint by snapping up Commercial Bank of Africa’s local arm in 1969 and Nile Bank in 2007. The rebrand to Absa Bank Uganda Ltd hit in November 2019. As of December 2023, the bank’s total assets were valued at UGX:4.5 trillion (US$1.19 billion). From loans to investments, Absa caters to individuals and big cooperatives alike, operating out of Barclays House on Hannington Road in Kampala.

4. Standard Chartered Bank

With 107 years under its belt, Standard Chartered Bank is Uganda’s longest-serving financial institution, opening its doors in 1912. It’s a pioneer—first with the VISA Electron debit card, toll-free phone banking, and derivative products. As of December 2020, it had an asset base of UGX. 3.8 trillion (US$1.072 billion), with shareholders’ equity of UGX. 937 billion (US$264 million).With over 10 branches and 30 ATMs, it’s a mainstay, headquartered at Speke Road in Kampala.

5. DFCU Bank

DFCU Bank keeps it practical with savings, loans, and mortgages across 60 branches and 100 ATMs. Founded in 1964, DFCU expanded its reach by acquiring Uganda Leasing Company in 1999. As of December 2022, DFCU Bank had total assets of UGX:3.283 trillion (US$893.78 million), and shareholders’ equity of UGX:614.5 billion (US$167.3 million). Its base? Kyadondo Road in Nakasero.

6. Bank of Baroda Uganda

As of December 2023, the bank had total assets of USh2,804,828,346,000/= (approx. US$746 million), with shareholders’ equity of USh708,851,014,000/= (approx. US$188 million). BOBU owns all of Baroda Capital Markets (Uganda) Limited, which was established in 1993. The subsidiary is a broker/dealer in capital markets and is licensed by Uganda’s Capital Markets Authority (CMA). Head Office – 18 Kampala Road, Kampla (Main Branch)

7. Equity Bank

Equity Bank, part of Kenya’s Equity Group Holdings, is on a tear with 35 branches and 40 ATMs. As of December 2021, total assets were valued at UGX: 2.9 trillion (approx. US$745 million), with customer deposits of UGX:2.3 trillion (approx. US$597 million) and a loan book of UGX: 1.5 trillion (approx. US$389.3 million). The bank maintains its headquarters and main branch in Janani Luwum Church House, at 34 Kampala Road

8. Citibank Uganda

The bank is a medium-sized international bank that focuses on meeting the banking needs of large corporate customers as well as of those individuals with high net worth. Since 1999, Citibank Uganda, a Citigroup offspring, has carved out a niche as a top corporate bank, serving 450+ clients across sectors. As of December 2019, the bank’s total asset valuation was approximately USh990 billion (US$262 million). The bank is headquartered in Nakasero, Kampala.

9. Housing Finance Bank

Owning 60% of Uganda’s mortgage market as of 2018, Housing Finance Bank started in 1967 and went commercial in 2008. On 31 December 2023, the bank’s assets were USh2.14 trillion (US$569.641 million). The bank made an after-tax profit of USh65.1 billion (US$16.37 million) in 2023. At that time, core capital was USh273.8 billion (approx. US$72.9 million). Head quartered at Wampewo Avenue in Kololo.

10. Bank of Africa Uganda

Kicking off as Sembule Investment Bank in 1984, Bank of Africa Uganda now employs over 400 staff under the Bank of Africa Group umbrella. With competitive rates and a focus on local needs, it’s based on Jinja Road in Kampala. Group assets? A hefty €7.8 billion ($7.9 billion) as of 2016.
