In a landmark move for East African aviation, Uganda Airlines has officially launched direct flights from Entebbe International Airport (EBB) to London Gatwick (LGW). This new route marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s global outreach, bolstering trade, tourism, and investment links between Uganda and the United Kingdom.
The airline will operate this nonstop service four times a week, on Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, catering to both business and leisure travelers eager for a seamless connection between the two countries.
Operated using Uganda Airlines’ state-of-the-art Airbus A330-800neo, the route promises top-tier comfort, fuel efficiency, and long-haul reliability. It’s a powerful symbol of Uganda’s commitment to both sustainable aviation and high-quality service.

Strategic Gateway to the World
Speaking about the launch, Uganda Airlines CEO Jenifer Bamuturaki highlighted the strategic importance of the route. “This new route connects Uganda to one of the world’s busiest and most strategic aviation hubs. On the return leg, flight times are synchronized to enable smooth connections from London to East, Central, and West Africa.”
This move comes in the wake of Uganda Airlines’ aggressive expansion, including recent route additions to Abuja, Lusaka, and Harare. These destinations are part of a broader strategy to establish Entebbe as a major hub in Africa.
Boosting Trade, Tourism, and Bilateral Ties
The direct London-Entebbe route is not just about easier travel—it’s about unlocking economic potential. Total trade between Uganda and the UK reached GBP 860 million in 2023, and Uganda’s cumulative exports to the UK over five years have topped GBP 2.3 billion. This new air link is set to strengthen that growth trajectory.
Uganda’s Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala, called the launch “a bridge for business, investment, and people-to-people connections.” He added that this was part of a long-term vision inspired by President Museveni’s goal of reducing travel time and fostering global connectivity.

A Win for Tourism
Tourism, one of Uganda’s biggest revenue earners, is also set to benefit immensely. The UK remains a major source market for visitors to Uganda’s iconic attractions—from the mountain gorillas to the Nile’s source. “This flight makes it easier than ever for British tourists to access our diverse natural wonders,” said Gen. Wamala.
Sustainable Growth and Global Recognition
Uganda Airlines has the distinction of being the first carrier to operate the Airbus A330-800neo into London Gatwick. Gabriel Semelas, President of Airbus Africa & Middle East, praised the milestone, stating that it underscores the aircraft’s efficiency and the airline’s commitment to world-class service.
The national carrier, relaunched in 2019, has since grown into a symbol of Uganda’s aspirations in modern aviation. With a fleet recognized for safety, environmental care, and innovation, Uganda Airlines is carving out its space on the international stage.
As Uganda Airlines continues its journey toward becoming a key player in global aviation, the London route is more than just a flight path, it’s a lifeline connecting people, businesses, and cultures.
For travelers and traders alike, this new route opens a world of possibilities.
