Uganda Unveils Locally-Made Smartphones

Simi

In a historic stride for technology and local manufacturing, Uganda has launched its first locally made smartphones through Simi Mobile, a company founded in 2019. The launch, held on November 30 at U-Home in Arena Mall, Kampala, marked a pivotal moment as Uganda positioned itself as a leader in East African innovation.

Empowering Uganda’s Talent and Economy

Hon. Evelyn Anite, the Minister of State for Investment and Privatisation, couldn’t contain her pride during the unveiling. Sharing her enthusiasm on social media, she wrote:

“Fellow citizens, did you know Uganda is now manufacturing smartphones made by Ugandans? These devices are now being exported to Kenya, Tanzania, and Ethiopia. What a time to be proud of our country!”

The event also drew local shoppers who enjoyed exclusive discounts on the proudly Ugandan-made electronic devices, underscoring accessibility as a key focus of this initiative.

Pioneering Technology in East Africa

Simi Mobile’s operations are based in the Kampala Industrial and Business Park in Namanve, supported by the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) and the National Information Technology Authority of Uganda (NITA-U). The company, a subsidiary of Chinese electronics firm Engo Holding, makes Uganda the first East African country to locally assemble mobile phones.

Beyond smartphones, Simi Mobile is branching out into the production of laptops and other ICT products, showcasing a bold ambition to transform Uganda into a regional technology powerhouse.

Regional and Global Impact

What sets this initiative apart is its scope. Simi Mobile isn’t just serving Uganda—it’s exporting its products to Kenya, Tanzania, and Ethiopia, boosting regional trade and showcasing East Africa’s potential in the global tech ecosystem.

By leveraging a combination of international expertise and local talent, Simi Mobile is not only creating jobs but also inspiring a new wave of tech entrepreneurship in Uganda.

The launch symbolizes more than just a business milestone; it’s a testament to Uganda’s resolve to lead the charge in African technology manufacturing. With an emphasis on affordability, accessibility, and innovation, Simi Mobile is setting a benchmark for other nations in the region to follow.
