Uganda Airlines has unveiled one of the most significant milestones in its growth journey, placing its first-ever direct order with Boeing for eight next-generation aircraft as the national carrier accelerates its ambition to become a leading aviation hub in East Africa.
The agreement, announced at the 2026 Farnborough International Airshow, comprises four Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft and four Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, forming the cornerstone of the airline’s long-term fleet modernization and expansion strategy.
The investment comes at a time of rising passenger demand across Africa and increasing connectivity between the continent and key international markets. Designed for superior fuel efficiency, extended range and enhanced passenger comfort, the new aircraft will enable Uganda Airlines to strengthen its regional network while expanding long-haul services to the Middle East, Asia and Europe.
The Boeing 737-8 MAX will primarily serve regional and medium-haul routes, offering the flexibility and efficiency required for destinations across Africa, the Gulf and India. Complementing it, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner will support intercontinental operations with the range and capacity needed to connect Uganda to major global cities.
Speaking during the announcement, Uganda Airlines Chief Executive Officer Ato Girma Wake described the acquisition as a transformational milestone for the airline.
“This commitment with Boeing marks a defining step in Uganda Airlines’ growth journey and in our broader ambition to position Entebbe as a strategic aviation hub for the region,” he said.
Beyond expanding capacity, the aircraft are expected to reduce fuel consumption by 20–25 percent compared to older-generation models, lowering operating costs while supporting the airline’s sustainability objectives. The partnership also extends beyond aircraft acquisition to include technical collaboration, training, and capacity development, strengthening Uganda Airlines’ operational capabilities for the future.

Currently operating scheduled passenger and cargo services to 17 destinations across 13 countries, Uganda Airlines is positioning itself to capture growing demand for travel, trade and cargo services while reinforcing Uganda’s role as a gateway to East and Central Africa.
More than a fleet expansion, the Boeing order signals a strategic investment in Uganda’s aviation future one that enhances global connectivity, supports tourism and trade, and lays the foundation for the national carrier’s next phase of sustainable growth.
